Department of Chemistry

The Department was established on the year 1978-79 with 16 Chemistry (pass) seats which was increased to 64 on 18.02.1992. Chemistry (Honors) was started with 16 seats for the session 1981-82 by Letter No. 3754. Again Chemistry (Hon’s) seats were increased from 16 to 48 on 30.06.2015. On 18.11.2016 the Hon’s seats were reincreased to 56 on 18.11.2016. The Department is now running with 56 (Honors) seats.

Department of Commerce

Department of Commerce is one of the oldest and Premier department of Ganjam College. It was set up in the year, when the college came into its existence. This Department started in the academic year 1971-72 with an objective to impart quality commerce education among the students of the locality identified with the erstwhile Jayshree Chemical Industry.

The college has introduced Honours in Commerce of Accounting from the same academic year with 32 seats. Now it is extended up to 96 seats. The Department introduced Semester system with CBCS pattern from the year 2015-16.

The department maintains library from which books are issued to the students for reference. Regular seminars are conducted in which the final year students are encouraged to deliver seminar talks. Eminent speakers are invited at periodic intervals to deliver talks on topics of academic interest. Apart from studied the students also engage themselves in various extension activities like sapling plantation, blood donation, cleanliness drive etc. as apart of their social responsibility. It is this holistic development of the students that the students of the department continue to accentuate.

The Department of Commerce provides excellent teaching and learning environment with its   focus on continuing education. Significantly, Legend has it, that at one point of time, Ganjam College was known across district borders for Commerce Education. It has produced a galaxy of students who are engaged in various public and private sectors.

Department of Botany

The Department of Botany was started in the academic year 1978-79 with an objective to motivate the students for higher education and to empower them to face the global scenario. The college has introduced Honours in Botany from the academic year 1991-1992 with 16 seats which was increased to 32 in the year 2015-2016. Apart from teaching the Honours subject, the department also undertakes teaching of environmental studies in Arts and Commerce at the degree level. The department maintains a seminar library from which books are issued to the students for reference. Regular seminars are conducted in which the final year students are encouraged to deliver seminar talks. Eminent speakers are invited at periodic intervals to deliver talks on topics of academic interest. Department of Economics

The Department of Economics started in the year 1969-70 for providing pre-degree and under graduate degree in Arts and Commerce streams. It always envisions motivating the students of the locality for higher education and excellence in Economics subject for getting employment. The college introduced Honours in Economics from the session 1978-79 with 16 seats with the affiliation from Berhampur University. The honours seat of the departments was extended from 16 to 48 in the year 2015-16 with the permission of higher education department government of Odisha. Berhampur University accorded affiliation for the 48 seat in economics honours from the same year. Prof. Prahalad panda was the first HOD of the economics department and also was the in-charge principal of the college. There were four faculties member in the department for teaching economics in Arts and Commerce streams. The department had conducted several department seminars and state level seminar on different topics. At present the department has three faculty member headed by Dr. Purushottam sahu along with Mrs Madhury padhy and Sri Suryanarayan muduli. This department has produced a huge numbers of students who are engaged variously in teaching, research and other fields in both Government as well as private sectors.

The Department has been organising seminars and workshops on a regular basis to encourage Students to present seminar papers related to the current issues of the economy.

The vision of the economics department is to achieve higher standard of the academic performance to provide quality education to student for acquiring knowledge and skills in the subject to compete the challenges of the job market and acquire higher education in different institution.

The Department of English (Degree) started functioning from the session 1970-71. It always envisions to motivate the students of the locality for higher education and excellence in English language and literature.

The college introduced Honours in English from the session 1981-82 with 16 seats after getting affiliation from Berhampur University. Seats increased to 32 in the year 2015.The Semester system under CBCS pattern was started in 2016.This department has produced a large numbers of students who are engaged variously in teaching, research and other fields in both Government as well as private sectors.

The Department has been organising seminars and workshops on a regular basis to encourage students to present seminar papers related to various topics relevant to their syllabus. Also, the department is trying to impart quality education to the students to enable them to face the challenges and set themselves in different jobs for their livelihood.

Department of History

Ganjam College, Ganjam was established in 1969, since then History as a main subject of Intermediate level in Humanity section came to existence. As subject of study, History was very popular and chosen by most of the students.

As a subject in degree level History as a main optional subject remained equally popular from 1969, the year of opening of the degree classes in the college. Honours in History opened in 1969 as has remained a hot favorite subject of the students. The department of history manned by dedicated teachers had remained in the fore front in organizing seminars and discussions on current events apart from subject related topics.

IT stands to the credit of the department performance of the students in university examinations has remained impressive till date.

The main motto of the department is to create among the rural students about the historical studies of the country as well as the globe. The members of the department have constantly trying to motivate the students by creating awareness among them and in popularizing the subject by providing update information regarding emergent trends in the subject. The department has undertaken systematic steps by making early lesion plan basing on which lesson progress is maintained. The faculty members sit at regular intervals and short out different short coming based on students’ feedback. The department has been quite sincere and methodical in finishing course as per syllabus in time, holding the internal assessment and departmental seminars at frequent interval, and in creating more enthusiasm among students and by holding departmental seminars on burning topics. However, students’ activity in this institution has been of average standards due to less exposure, as most of our students are from rural areas. We have taken modest steps in upgrading the standard of our student and making them more competitive and successful. Performance of degree students of our college is far ahead of others colleges of the university. Finally we can say that there is miles to go and before web attain to our distant dream and objectives.

History is the realm in which all humanistic subject live. So the department endeavors to make the subject lively thereby attract rural and economically weaker students of the area to take history and derive pleasure by reading history at the level of higher education which makes them not only readers but also contributors by engaging themselves in writing and research works.

By organizing departmental seminars the students are provided a platform to highlight the various historical materials of their locality and also the achievements and errors of the past. Thereby to make a conscious effort to avoid the mistakes of past.

Needless to mention such intellectual pursues greatly enhance the employability of students of history in the present scarce job market.

History Department Seminar: 2020 of Ganjam college

Department of Mathematics

In the academic session 1969-70, Mathematics Pass subject was introduced in Arts Stream of Degree level with 48 seats vide Govt. Order No.3578, dated.21.07.1971. In 1981-82 Mathematics Pass Subject was introduced in Science Stream of Degree level with 32 seats vide Govt. Order No.50726, dated.04.12.1981.  The seats of Mathematics Pass in Science was increased from 32 to 64 in 1990-91 session vide Govt. Order No.1174, dated.06.11.1992.

Mathematics Honours subject was introduced in Science stream of our institution with 16 seats from the academic session 2015-16 vide Govt. Order No.3060, dated.23.06.2015.

Department of Logic and Philosophy

The Department of Logic and Philosophy was established in the year 1971-72 for providing pre-degree and under graduate degree in Arts stream. It always envisions motivating the students of the locality for higher education and excellence in Logic and Philosophy for getting employment and higher aims in life. Mr. Govinda Panda, a man vision of this locality was the first faculty member of the Department. Since then, a number of illustrious persons have served in the Department leaving a mark in the impressionable mind of the students. Honours in Philosophy was granted in the year 2015-16 with 16 seats. This department has produced a large numbers of students who are engaged variously in teaching, research and other fields in both Government as well as private sectors. The Department is now headed by Dr. Simanchala Bholo who has near about thirty years of teaching experience to his credit along with his scholarship in Buddhist philosophy. 

The Department has been organising seminars and workshops on a regular basis to encourage Students to present seminar papers related to the philosophical issues relevant to the present-day society.

Vision

The vision of the department is to achieve higher standard of the academic performance to provide quality education to student for acquiring knowledge and skills in the subject to compete the challenges of the job market and acquire higher education in different institution. It is to train the minds of the students to be neither pessimistic nor optimistic but to adopt a middle path and that is to be realistic.

Department of Physics

With a great hope to elevate the educational status of the pupil in and around of Ganjam town,Ganjam college, Ganjam took its birth on the auspicious day of 7th august 1969 due to the tireless endeavour of some of the great visionaries of this region. Soon the college started galloping with an aim and objective not only to train the pupil imparting higher education course curriculum but also mould their brain to undertake the responsibility to work for the society putting their knowledge and vigour. In order to multiply its dimension, the college incorporated the science and commerce education in addition to arts. As a result of which the education in undergraduate degree level i.e. BA, BSc and BCom in honours and general were started getting the required recognition from the department of higher education, Govt. of Odisha and affiliation from Berhampur University.

Accordingly the Dept. of Physics was established in the academic session 1978 – 79 to impart Bachelor in Science course with Honours and general with a vision to inculcate scientific temperament in the young buds interested to focus their study with Physics Honours as a subject and invigorating their talent with an inspiration to pursue higher education and research, thereby taking part in developing the human race with new discoveries and inventions with a constructive approach.   The department of Physics has its mission to take care of its young buds for their all-round development to meet the challenges of contemporary world in the way of generating their interest not only in the subject but also in personality development, leadership quality to undertake the social responsibility with spotless character and probity.

Department of Political Science

The department of Political Science was established in the year 1969-70 for providing pre-degree and under graduate degree in Arts streams. It always envisions motivating the students of the locality for higher education and excellence in Political Science for getting employment. Presently it has 48 seats in Honours Course. The Department conducts classes according to the syllabus provided by Berhampur University, Berhampur (Odisha).Informative Lectures along with ample study materials are provided to the students by the faculty members which has helped the Department maintain a consistent record of academic success over the years. Students in the Department are encouraged to pursue higher studies to enhance their knowledge and compete in various national and state level competitive exams. With this objective, the Department organizes class lectures, interdisciplinary classes, interactive sessions, discussions on current affairs, tutorial classes, PPT presentations through which the students can get a broader perspective of the latest socio-economic and political development of the state and political leadership.

 

The Department organizes occasional seminars to inculcate communicative skills and active participation of the students in academic activities. The Department also conducts monthly tests and mid-term tests to evaluate students’ performance. Apart from academic activities the members of the faculty help the college authority in various ways. Besides this, to maintain academic relationship between the parents and teachers and to get suggestions of the parents for the redressal of the students’ problems, the Department organizes parents-teachers meet as per the CMS schedule. Students have access to Central and Seminar Library for recommended reading. The Department has also initiated dedicated and closed social media groups for each batch of students for instant communication and initiations.

The learning outcome of the Department is the understanding of politics and inculcation of good citizenship values among the students, making them aware of their rights and duties. The curriculum of the Department encourages gender sensitization, religious harmony etc. The Department is committed to the vision and mission of the college. Environmental awareness is especially inculcated among the students of the Department by teaching them the history of environmental movements and organizing seminars on Climate Change.

Department of Zoology

The Department started in 1972 under faculty of Biological Science. The Department started its Honours Course from the academic session 1991-92. The course curricula in semester pattern wise introduced in zoology from the academic session 2016-17 and continued with the same system through several revisions. We keep a broad vision and mission to uplift  the academic and research standard of our department.
